Ceremonial Cacao in India

You can now buy ceremonial cacao in India! Yes! Our ceremonial cacao is made using traditional recipe & process to be used during cacao ceremonies. Cacao in a minimally processed form is believed to be a vasodilator, meaning your blood vessels widen & muscular systems relax potentially helping increase blood flow by up to 30%, meaning that potentially more blood, is moving through your body & nourishing all of your systems. Used for cacao ceremonies, it is cacao in its purest paste form and does not taste like chocolate! Ceremonial Cacao has no sweetener added. The only ingredient present in ceremonial cacao is lightly air roasted (toasted) and ground whole shelled organic cacao beans. Nothing more, nothing less.  Nothing is ever added, chemically altered or taken away. Unlike hot chocolate which is made from cacao powder (where the cocoa butter is pressed out), we leave in the cacao butter, the carrier of all of cacao’s benefits. The drink is made with hot water, minimal sweetener (if so desired) – by contrast to a typical hot chocolate made with cocoa powder, sugar and milk!

Made by cold-pressing lightly roasted cocoa beans the nutritional content of Ceremonial cacao is believed to be preserved in the drink. It is gentle but potent in creating an uplifting state of being. Cacao is the most pharmacologically complex food in nature. It is rich in antioxidants and contains over 300 nutrients including magnesium, large amounts of iron, omega-6, vitamin C, chromium, trace elements, sulphur, zinc & copper to name just a few. It is believed to contain nearly four times the antioxidant content of regular processed dark chocolate, 20 times more than blueberries, and 119 times more than bananas.

History of Ceremonial Cacao

According to both archeologists and Mayan spiritual elders, the Cacao Spirit was one of the most powerful deities in ancient Mayan cosmology. The Mayans discovered the cacao tree and gave it a divine status. Cacao beans were very lightly roasted and ground, after which a bitter hot chocolate drink was prepared, using hot water, to which sometimes cayenne pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamon and honey was added. It was used in religious ceremonies, buried in the tombs of high priests and used to worship Ek Chuah, the Mayan god of merchants and patron saint of cacao. The Aztecs later believed that the cacao drink served as a life elixir for the wealthy elite of priests and other dignitaries and gave them supernatural strength and performance ability and hence its importance grew.
In modern day, since cacao is said to have the ability to connect to your heart chakra, it contributes to every transformational shift you set your intention upon, whether it is to see through and let go of old patterns and traumas, or to a deeper understanding of yourself and your unique path of life. It is said that cacao has the potential to lift the veil of the seen world, giving you access to the world of the unseen. In modern day, Ceremonial Cacao in India is consumed by practitioners who teach Yoga, Mindfulness, Chakra, Metta, Vipassana, Guided, Transcendental, Concentrative meditation and sound healing. The raw & minimally processed version of cacao used for cacao ceremonies is called ceremonial cacao.
Ceremonial Cacao is perceived as a medicine known as soft, feminine and loving and stimulates the heart to open, strengthens the feeling of connection with yourself and the people around you. It is seen as the ultimate heart opener. During a cacao ceremony, supporting techniques are used to ensure that the cacao and the experience do their work optimally. Depending on the shaman who accompanies the process, ceremonial songs, prayer, yoga, sound (or other) meditation and dance will be used.
The combination of drinking Raw Ceremonial Cacao and experiencing Tantric Breath, Sound, Movement and Meditation is explained as explosive & heart-opening, raising the vibrational frequency within all the cells of your body and opening the doors to dimensions of Pleasure, Bliss, Sensuality and Peace that enable us to move into a new sense of our body. Explore letting go of the mind and moving into realms of higher consciousness with Ceremonial Cacao.

What is Cacao Ceremony?

Cacao ceremonies are actually a type of shamanic healing, but they don’t have hallucinogenic or “out of body” effects, unlike some of the other shamanic experiences. Cacao ceremony usually involves a communal gathering with a sacred circle, music and of course, ceremonial cacao. Cacao ceremony is a once in a lifetime experience and a way of life for many. Engaging with chocolate as a ritual, rather than consuming it as candy, has direct positive impact on our individual well-being as well as our global ecosystem. Shani Jay (Founder of She Rose Revolution) claims that a cacao ceremony has Emotional and Spiritual benefits which help in healing. It helps with the following:

  • Heart Opening
  • Connection with your higher self
  • Enhances and deepens meditation
  • A pathway to creativity
  • Improved yoga practice
  • Mental clarity
  • Re-balance of your inner male & female energies
  • Inner peace
  • Healing
  • Career guidance

The traditional ceremonial grade cacao in South America is produced from Native Cacao Strains which grow naturally. They grow in the wild and without human interaction/cultivation in South American countries like Guatemala & Peru. These strains are both the rarest and contain the compounds in most concentration, necessary for ceremonial use. Ceremonial cacao is said to “open clear channels between the body, the heart, and a divine spirit”. When consumed in “ceremonial” quantities (30-60 Grams), the mixture produces a wide range of reactions from feeling of openness and ecstasy to hallucinations in rare cases, according to regular practitioners.

For the uninitiated, ceremonial cacao does not taste like hot chocolate! It tastes purer and you feel more connected to the cacao.

What is the difference between cacao paste and ceremonial cacao paste?

Technically speaking, cacao paste and ceremonial cacao are made of more or less the same ingredients. It’s the thoughtfulness and tradition in processing (low temperature roasting & stone grinding) and the intention in drinking ceremonial cacao that differentiates it from cacao paste. In a regular 100% cocoa paste, butter and vanilla is usually added. However, nothing is taken out or added during this process to ceremonial cacao, which leaves the ceremonial cacao pure.

Disclaimer about Ceremonial Cacao in India

To be absolutely clear, honest, upfront & transparent, “We do not use the original Native Cacao Strains grown in Guatemala & Peru to make the ceremonial grade cacao. Also, we do not hand peel the husks. This is mainly to avoid any human contact during this time of pandemic.” Kocoatrait ceremonial cacao proudly uses Organic Indian cacao with an aim to be local and Make in India and Made for India. However, we do encourage you to consume this as usual during a cacao ceremony!

However, while we carefully follow the low roasting and stone grinding process as prescribed (to the T), we cannot get hold of the Native Cacao Strains in India! Simply because it does not grow in india and is limited to Guatemala & Peru. It is made available in blocks which you can cut or shave. You can now buy ceremonial cacao in India from Kocoatrait. How to host a Cacao Ceremony?

Cacao ceremonies have been around for thousands of years, originating from Mayan and Aztec times and hosted for spiritual, medicinal and ceremonial purposes for inner awakening and creative guidance. A ceremony combines Breathing exercises, meditation, sound journey, dance, music. It all sounds fun! There isn’t a rule book, but here are some of the elements a cacao ceremony can involve. Usually, a cacao ceremony is hosted by one or several people trained in preparing cacao and holding sacred space. A person usually takes the lead and here’s what you can expect from a cacao ceremony.

  1. Create a sacred space, often with a table in the middle in a peaceful and disturbance free surrounding. We have hosted a cacao ceremony among the sounds of the sea waves !
  2. A group of committed participants sit in a circle and open up the circle by going around and saying your name out loud, sharing an intention of the ceremony.
  3. Set an intention for the ceremony (perhaps the most important!)
  4. Pray for peace and inner awakening peacefully together
  5. Honor and bless the cacao to give it collective healing powder
  6. Pour the cacao in your mug and pass it around the circle humbly.
  7. Savour the cacao slowly and try to connect with yourself and the origin of the cacao.
  8. Breathwork, meditation, sound journey, dance, music – from here, it’s up to the person leading the cacao ceremony and whatever tool they prefer to use to amplify and manifest the intentions created by the participants and continue the memorable journey.
  9. Close the circle – Just like cooling off exercises, this is an important part of the ceremony that invites integration of the deep spaces you may have explored during your cacao journey. We must not forget to thank the cacao tree for this opportunity.
